How we verify

Each listing is a record we can point at. A maintainer opened a government page or PDF, quoted the name and (when printed) the license number from that page, and wrote the date. Directory sites, LILWA membership, Angi, and ads are not a license source.

If a roster does not print a number, the license field is the phrase that is true — for example “not printed on published town roster” — not a guessed ID.

Suffolk County, New York

Primary live lookup: Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs Liquid Waste License search, ca.suffolkcountyny.gov/dcasearch. Accela Citizen Access Consumer Affairs module is cited as a second door to the same county records.

Supporting county artifact: Suffolk County Septic Improvement Program Approved List of SIP Installers, ranking PDF revised 11/06/2025. County FAQ states SIP vendors hold a Liquid Waste License. SCDHS Office of Wastewater Management will not inspect an install without a valid liquid waste license.

NYS DEC Part 364 numbers that appear only on a company site are labeled company-published, not DART-verified. The DART search is a JavaScript wall.

Nassau County, New York

Primary live lookup: Nassau County Department of Consumer Affairs Search Businesses With Valid Licenses (Home Improvement), apex5.nassaucountyny.gov/ords/f?p=288:500:::NO. The number on the page is a Home Improvement ID, not a Suffolk-style LW. Installers in the county I/A grant program must hold that license.

Supporting county artifact: Nassau County Soil & Water Conservation District S.E.P.T.I.C. participating designers/installers PDF updated 7/29/2024. That PDF prints name, street, and phone. Barnstable County, Massachusetts

MassDEP does not license septage pumpers. Town Boards of Health do. Primary pumping source for this seed: Town of Harwich Health Department Licensed Septic Haulers roster updated 01.30.2026 (Harwich CivicPlus asset). Town of Harwich Licensed Septic Installers (updated 10.02.2025) is used only to add install when the same firm is on that list. Town of Dennis 2023 hauler/installer PDFs are used for ZIP and city corroboration, not as the live license date.

Those town rosters print name, street or PO Box, and phone. They do not print a permit number. We do not invent one.

Plymouth County, Massachusetts

Same MassDEP rule as Barnstable. Quote from the consumer-protection guide (opened 2026-09-02): “To find a licensed septage pumper/hauler, contact your local Board of Health. MassDEP does not license or certify septic-system pumpers or recommend any company.”

Town lists opened this pass:

Plymouth and Kingston rosters print name, street or PO Box, phone, and (Kingston) ZIP. They do not print a permit number. Duxbury prints a permit number; that number is quoted only for firms on the Duxbury list. Streets outside Plymouth County, PO Box-only rows, Cape HQ firms already in Barnstable, and generic installer-only excavators are omitted. Brockton is not padded as sewer-only.

Bristol County, Massachusetts

Same MassDEP rule as Barnstable and Plymouth. Quote from the consumer-protection guide (opened 2026-09-02): “To find a licensed septage pumper/hauler, contact your local Board of Health. MassDEP does not license or certify septic-system pumpers or recommend any company.” No county-wide tank count was opened this pass. Urban mill cities (Fall River, New Bedford, Taunton) are sewered; Westport / Dartmouth / Rehoboth / Freetown-style towns are not. A firm is listed only when a fetchable 2024–2026 town hauler list names it and a printed street is in Bristol County.

Town lists opened this pass:

Westport and Dartmouth/North Attleborough hauler rosters do not print a permit number. Ocean County, New Jersey

Septic waste is solid waste in New Jersey. NJDEP pages advertise a live DataMiner report, Solid Waste Transporters (A-901 Approved): Transporters - A-901 Licensed - Solid Waste. Landing pages opened this pass: dep.nj.gov/wastecompliance/transportation-of-waste/ and dep.nj.gov/dshw/forms-and-info/ (item 28). The DataMiner report itself did not open this pass (timeout / empty body / 403). A-901 numbers are not invented.

Fallback government PDF actually opened: NJDEP residual-waste haulers phone list (names, streets or PO Boxes, cities, phones; PDF created 2012-11-15): waste-haulers-phone-numbers.pdf. MassDEP does not license or certify septic-system pumpers or recommend any company.” No county-wide tank count was opened this pass. City of Worcester is largely sewered; downtown Worcester street shops are not padded. Rural/suburban towns (Shrewsbury, Charlton, Sutton, Douglas, Sterling, Lancaster, and peers) are the source streets.

Tank / unsewered share (Martha’s Vineyard Commission, Stormwater and Wastewater Management): wastewater from about 1,800 properties is treated at one of the Island’s five wastewater treatment plants (Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, Tisbury, Airport, and Wampanoag Tribal Housing); over 14,000 Vineyard properties (more than 90%) treat wastewater on site — cesspools, older septic systems, or newer Title 5 systems.
